In an interview taped Tuesday morning for broadcast on that night'sThe Tonight Show With Jay Leno, President Barack Obama told the talk show host that he has not been watching the debates among his prospective Republican rivals.our editor recommendsObama's Trip to L.A. PHOTOS: 10 Hollywood Players That Will Make a Difference in the 2012 Elections On a more serious note, Obama told Leno that he believes Americans are weary of the congressional Republicans' reflexive opposition to his legislative program. "Look, I think the things that folks across the country are most fed up with, whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, is putting party ahead of country or putting the next election ahead of the next generation," the president said. Similarly, when Leno asked Obama how he felt about GOP criticism of his decision to withdraw American troops from Iraq by the end of the year, the chief executive replied, "It's shocking that they opposed something I proposed." PHOTOS: Best Presidents in Film and Television Asked by Leno for his reaction to the execution of Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafiby insurgents in that country, Obama mused: "Well, this is somebody who, for 40 years, has terrorized his country and supported terrorism. And he had an opportunity during the Arab spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy. We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it. And obviously, you never like to see anybody come to the kind of end that he did, but I think it obviously sends a strong message around the world to dictators that people long to be free and they need to respect the human rights and the universal aspirations of people." PHOTOS: Box Office Politics: The Movies and Stars Dems vs. GOPers Love (and Love to Hate) Though Obama did not say so, the latter comment seemed aimed at Syrian President Bashar Assad, who is locked in a violent struggle with reform-minded dissidents in his country. In the customary monologue preceding his conversation with Obama, Leno quipped that the president's visit to the show -- his second since his election was part of an effort to raise money "for a huge disaster relief project. It's called NBC. We can't let another corporation go under." Related Topics Barack Obama Jay Leno Politics

Iranian Filmmaker Jafar Panahi Faces Six-Year Stretch After Sentence Upheld
In some manner this wound up past us a couple of days ago, but Iran has already established another step toward silencing one of the country’s most critical filmmakers after an appeals court upheld a six-year jail sentence, according to various reviews that incorporated the us government-run newspaper Iran. According to that newspaper: “The charges he was sentenced for are acting against national security and propaganda in the regime.” Uncle Mohammad Rasoulof also faced a six-year sentence, that was knocked lower to at least one year. Panahi’s sentence includes a 20-year stop on making films, and traveling abroad. The convictions against Panahi and Rasoulof motivated an outcry among filmmakers, Amnesty Worldwide and worldwide film festivals this year. Panahi’s lawyers apparently appeals again, but the situation is searching dire with an award-winning filmmaker who freely mourned the deaths of protesters inside the presidential elections, and reviews say he and Rasoulof apparently developed a film in regards to the aftermath. This really is really exactly the same government that barbarically sentenced actress Marzieh Vafamehr to 90 lashes together with annually jail time for turning up throughout my Tehran Available, and which referred to as Cannes Film Festival for “fascist behavior” if the banned director Lars von Trier for his dopey comments about Nazis produced in a press conference for Melancholia. Panahi won the digital camera d’Or at Cannes for your 1995 film The White-colored Balloon, as well as the festival pointedly added films by Panahi and Rasoulof towards the type in May.

Portal Director Plans Crime Of Century
Sci-fi heist from Fast 5 writerBack in August, commercials director Dan Trachtenberg turned some heads (about seven million of them) with his impressive YouTube-posted short based on Valve's Portal videogames. If it was intended as a calling-card, it worked, since Trachtenberg has just been "attached" by Universal to Crime of the Century.Portal: No Escape was, as you'd expect, heavy on the slick sci-fi visuals (there was no cake, but thenthe cake is a lie), and it seems that we can expect something stylistically similar from Crime of the Century. Deadline describe it as "a high-octane heist thriller with a science-fiction twist".Given that the film will be produced by Fast 5 and Wanted writer Chris Morgan, "high octane" sounds about right. Morgan is currently the golden boy at Universal, with a two-year first-look deal. Crime of the Century is currently only at the pitch stage, but the studio were obviously keen on what they heard. It will actually be written by Daniel Kunka (Twelve Rounds) though, since Morgan is somewhat busy preparing Fast & Furious 6 (hooray!). The sign of a good manager is knowing when to delegate...

Roush Review: Last Man Standing
Tim Allen Even TV comfort food has an expiration date. So it is with Tim Allen's comeback vehicle on the network that made him a star.Last Man Standing (tonight, 8/7c, ABC) is basically a weary, gender-reversed version of Allen's hit Home Improvement. Only real difference is that this time, Allen's the only guy in a household of females: a long-suffering wife (Nancy Travis, who tends to sit back with a glass of wine and smile at her husband's boorish jokes) and three shrill daughters, including a single mom, a spoiled princess and a tomboy (the latter played by Kaitlyn Dever, who was so terrific on Justified as scrappy little Loretta and is one of many talents being wasted here).Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!As I noted in the Fall Preview issue, "This According to Tim vehicle will feel like Old Home (Improvement) Week to his legion of fans, but the buzz of nostalgia may be drowned out by the yawn of familiarity over such a hammy retread." Allen is now playing a variation on Tim Taylor as Grumpy Old Man: this time called Mike Baxter, who works for an outdoor sporting goods company that reeks of testosterone. Or, as Mike announces with pride when he walks into the office: "It smells like balls in here."Mothballs, maybe. (Although compared to ABC's other "woe is man" show it's being paired with next week, the unbearable Man Up!, this feels like a modern classic.)Instead of having a TV show on which to spout his gems of chauvinist wisdom, Mike is put in charge of the company's website, where he rails in very extreme webcam close-up against all manner of metrosexual "What happened to men?" offenses: citrus body wash, hair gel, tanning beds, even soccer as "Europe's covert war for the hearts and minds of America's kids." Cutting edge it's not, but that's not what this brand of middlebrow mugging is all about. As one of his daughters says in the second of tonight's back-to-back episodes, "He's just angry because ... we really don't know why." And it's pretty much impossible to care, since we've heard it all before, and it was funnier and fresher the first time around.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Albanian Oscar entry disqualified
'The Forgiveness of Blood'Albania's choice for foreign-language Oscar race, American director Joshua Marston's "The Forgiveness of Blood," has been disqualified after the Academy decided it did not have enough local input.Marston's film, shot on location in the Balkans country with a largely local crew and creative team, is about the modern impact of the country's tradition of blood feuds. With a Berlinale Silver Bear-award winning script that was co-written by an Albanian and dialogue that is all Albanian, the film was nominated late September after the Albanian Oscar committee checked that it met Academy Award criteria. But after the director of "Amnesty," one of three other local films that failed to make the cut, complained, the Academy revisited the issue last week and decided to disqualify "Blood."Bujar Alimani had written a formal letter of complaint to the Albanian National Center of Cinematography demanding that Marston's film be disqualified on that grounds that it was a mainly American production. That appears to have found a target in Los Angeles, where an Academy Awards committee is understood to have reviewed the decision and disqualified Marston's film last week on the grounds that it failed to meet local crew composition criteria. At a meeting Friday in Tirana, Albanian Oscar selectors that included all but one of the committee that had originally picked Marston's film, took another vote and "Amnesty" was officially selected as the country's nomination for foreign-lingo film. The committee consisted of film industry professionals, Esat Musliu, Bujar Lako, Durim Neziri, and Agron Tufa but not writer Teodor Laco."The one board members who was most outspoken for 'The Forgiveness of Blood,' writer Teodor Laco, didn't attend the meeting for personal reasons," a film industry source in Tirana told Variety on Sunday. The decision in L.A. to overrule the earlier nomination was not well received by some in Tirana.Artan Minarolli, head of the ANCC, told Variety: "The board in Albania voted for 'Forgiveness of Blood' for some [particular] reasons. The most important are: The film is 100% in Albanian Language. The story and the support of Albania, too, is strong in this film. The producer is Albanian and one of the major producers here. He and the director spent a long time in Albania before the shooting and developed the script and the project in close relationship with Albanian and technical people."Minarolli added that he had tried to explain to the Academy committee in Los Angeles that because Albania has a small film industry it is inevitably closely connected with foreign professionals and all local films involve the participation of foreign creative talent and crew."It is a cosmopolitan cinema that tries to survives through cultural exchange. In the past Albania was totally isolated; today we try to find reality in cinema and to make up for the time we lost over the past 50 years. The Academy needs to understand this."However, Alimani, director of "Amnesty" welcomed the decision. He told Variety that the original decision had been in "violation of the rules of the Academy itself; my protest was not for personal purposes, but because I feel that Albania has cinematographers who can be represented at a world level; selecting my film 'Amnesty' as the official Albanian nomination gives hope to young moviemakers in Albania and honors the work of all my staff."Marston, who learned Albanian during the making of his film, "The Forgiveness of Blood," said: "It's disappointing, to be sure. There was so much Albanian creative involvement in the making of the film. For the Academy to focus only on six key crew positions as the barometer of its Albanian-ness, to me, is sad."He added: "The film ['The Forgiveness of Blood'] is made by Albanians, in Albania, about Albania and in the Albanian language. And yet a great film like Kaurismaki's 'Le Havre,' which was shot in France with a French cast and a French story, qualifies as Finnish? And 'As If I Am Not There,' which was shot in the Balkans and is in Serbo-Croat with a cast from that region, qualifies as Irish? It's absurd."I think there's a problem with the system when Hollywood claims to know better than the submitting country whether a film belongs to them. It is incredibly disempowering and disenchanting for a country with a young film industry." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Why People Two-Hour Reality Shows Are Not going away soon
Dwts Overcome by all people two-hour reality shows? You aren't on your own, along with the systems admit it's a great watch. Nonetheless they still make the most of people supersized series - so be ready to see a lot more shows go the expansion route. Two-hour episodes was formerly rare, and limited to special key occasions. But the thing that was whenever a stunt is becoming standard, as two-hour series like Dwts, The Sing-Off, The Finest Loser as well as the X-Factor all occupy plenty of on-air property - sometimes eating up around four several hours of programming each week (if extended results shows and recap special deals are incorporated). "I am unsure anyone who thinks sitting for just two several hours is terrific," confesses one network professional. "It's a large commitment, and they're so unbelievably padded with garbage... In the start from the television season people could go, 'There are things If only to have a look at (rather than) watching this for just two several hours." Audiences are showing signs and signs and symptoms of fatigue, as numerous people shows publish double-digit ratings declines this fall. Dancing is gloomier 18% among audiences versus. a year ago, while Loser has lost 17% of the audience. A producer in a single of people shows confesses that audiences are overcome. "Two seasons ago we started talking about yanking for an hour approximately, but nobody wants to make it happen,In . according to him. Like, despite people ratings drops, systems like two-hour shows because audiences continue being more vulnerable to stay than once the credits roll and also the other show happens. "Once the show is nice you also appear to check out it, you'll probably say," another network professional states. "Something must be really dangerous towards the ratings to go to lower. Plus it constitutes a couple of of those shows feel bigger." For a lot of two-hour shows, audiences build with the evening, making that last half an hour most likely probably the most valuable. Wednesday night's episode in the X Factor, for example, started offered with a 3.5 rating inside the grownups 18-49 demo inside the first half an hour, and produced to some 4.3 rating within the final half an hour. "Performance shows are better to grow if someone makes them compelling enough," one professional states. "But we have plenty of negative feedback for your results shows. But every year we learn how to do them better." Meanwhile, costs might be amortized over two several hours - an important distinction, as reality shows have more costly. "Because the show reaches become more effective, it reaches be pricey," one producer states. "A powerful way to amortize one hour is making it two several hours. Then that second hour becomes a part of just what the first hour cost. You obtain in to a situation when a preliminary hour set you back $ 1 as well as the second costs 50 cents, your average is 75 cents hourly. In this era everybody needs to become smarter in the manner we produce these shows." Furthermore to lowering production costs, talent and producers love the two-hour episodes because most of them get paid out per hour - which essentially doubles their salary. "We now have changed people lives if this involves these two hour shows," states a producer. "They're working the identical period of time. Nonetheless they negotiate an hour or so approximately rate, and vary from 35 several hours of pay to 70 several hours of pay. This can be a completely lifestyle." But systems have become wise and starting to barter lower costs for hour two. "I've come across deals now where the systems pay 50% for hour two," producer states. Meanwhile, given the amount of filming that occurs on many reality shows, the two-hour shows no less than allow producers an chance to make use of really that footage. Often it helps story development, and frequently it stretches things out a lot of (a critique of shows like the Apprentice, which started off just like a one-hour series). Extreme Transformation: Home Edition executive producer George Verschoor states he relishes doing more extended episodes: "Throughout my show we have a lot more content and extreme elements than can fit. Getting amount of time in 2 several hours to see the story does present some challenges, but we ensure we format the show and pace it to have the ability to keep the audience up-to-date in with the whole structure of those two several hours." Adds fellow Home Edition executive producer Brady Connell, "Once we get thousands of people arriving to help and therefore many story lines, it's frustrating whenever we must edit it lower to have an hour." Among the approaching shows making the weekly leap in a single hour to two: The second season of ABC's Extreme Transformation: Fat Loss Edition, which every single week tales another participant's yearlong weightloss program. "It's a strange conundrum," one producer states. "I'm now getting paid out two occasions as much (and) I'm capable of show more character development. But it's a great request from the viewer."
